UTLA Work Stoppage

Update: 1/19/19 Connect Ed

Hello Cleveland families. This is Ms. Duong with an important message for parents and guardians. UTLA and LAUSD returned to the negotiating table last Thursday and have continued meeting Friday and today in an effort to reach a contract agreement. As of now, we have not received any further updates on a resolution. Please note that on Monday, school will be closed in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthday. Should the strike continue into Tuesday, school will be open and the District will continue to provide transportation and meal service. Tuesday is a 1:34 PM dismissal day. Once again, please note that during the strike, students who are not present will be marked absent. However, these absences will not count against students for senior privileges, including participation in graduation or against students for perfect attendance awards. Thank you for your patience and support through these challenging times. We miss the components that make up our vibrant campus: our teachers, counselors, school psychologists, psychiatric social worker, school nurse, and students. Just like all of you, we await a resolution to this matter. Should there be any updates, we will inform you on our school website and social media. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Update: 1/16/19 Connect Ed

Good evening Cleveland families. This is Ms. Duong with an important message for parents and guardians. We understand this is a difficult, challenging time for all. Despite the strike by members of United Teachers Los Angeles, our school remains open and operating. You are encouraged to send your child to school and the District is providing transportation and meal service as usual, along with after-school College Bound program operated by the Boys and Girls Club. Athletic programs and other extracurricular activities continue to be cancelled. Please note that during the strike, students who are not present will be marked absent. However, these absences will not count against students for senior privileges, including participation in graduation or against students for perfect attendance awards. Please refer to the message sent by Deputy Superintendent Ekchian that is available on the school website. Also, please monitor KLCS-TV, lausd.net and the district’s social media accounts for timely updates.

Update: 1/15//19: Email from Deputy Supt. Ekchian to Families

Dear parents and families,

We know these are challenging times in our schools and our top priority remains the safety of students, parents, educators and employees.

We are grateful to the thousands of Los Angeles Unified employees who kept our schools open and provided students with a secure and warm classroom and a meal.

We understand that many students were unable to attend school and are concerned about their report cards or transcripts. Be assured that Los Angeles Unified is not going to put our students in the middle of disputes between adults.

While state law does not excuse absences in case of a strike and students are expected to attend class, principals will work with students and families on attendance.

At the moment, schools will not be notifying parents of absences, but will continue to monitor student attendance and provide support to students on an individual basis. Student absences during the strike will not impact graduation.

If you have any questions, please visit lausd.net, or call our dedicated hotline at 213-443-1300.

Sincerely,

Vivian Ekchian
Deputy Superintendent

Update: 1/12/18 Connect Ed

This is Ms. Duong, principal of Grover Cleveland Charter High School with an important update related to our school’s programs for the coming week.  Should the District and UTLA fail to reach a resolution, UTLA has stated that its members will strike starting Monday. LAUSD has set up a hotline to answer parent questions during a strike. That hotline number is 213-443-1300.

Should a strike take place this Monday, our school will be open and staffed to welcome students.  Our leadership and support staff are committed to minimizing the impact of any work stoppage to our students to the best of our ability and to providing the highest quality support to our stakeholders.  Signs will be posted on campus to direct students to various room locations throughout the school day. Once again, thank you for your continued commitment to your child’s success and for your support through this difficult time.  We look forward to seeing your child at school on Monday.
