Weekly Updates 18-19

Week of June 3rd:

This is the last week of spring semester.

We will be on a Minimum Day Schedule Monday, June 3 through Wednesday, June 5 for Finals. School will let out at 12:36 PM.

Seniors, cap, gown and graduation ticket distribution is Wednesday at 10 AM in the MPR. You must be off the stop clearance list to pick up these items.

Locker cleanout is Wednesday at 1 PM.  Make sure to remove all personal items from your lockers.

On Thursday, June 6 and Friday, June 7 we will be on a Shortened Day Schedule. School will let out at 1:59 PM.

Mandatory graduation rehearsals is Thursday at 8 AM on the Football Field.  The ceremony starts promptly at 6 PM.

Friday is the last day of instruction.  Students, join us on the Quad at brunch for the summer kick-off.

Week of May 27th:

There is no school Monday in observance of Memorial Day.

Senior Awards Night is Tuesday at 5 PM on the Quad.

Join us Wednesday at 6:30 PM in the MPR for the Spring Band Concert.

This Friday is our Celebration Dance Showcase at 6 PM in the MPR.

Week of May 20th:

Don’t forget to learn more about Measure EE, a local school parcel tax funding measure, at www.MeasureEELAUSD.org. You are encouraged to be well informed about it. The deadline to register to vote in the June 4th special election is Monday, May 20.

Join us Tuesday at 6:30 PM in the MPR for the Spring Choir Concert.

Thursday we have AP Night at 5 PM. Come learn about some of the changes to the advanced placement program this fall, hear from select AP teachers, and get information about course expectations. Following the AP overview, we have Café Night at 6 PM in Room D-8.

Looking ahead: there is no school on Monday, May 27th in observance of Memorial Day. On May 28th, we have Senior Awards Night at 5 PM on the Quad. On May 29th, we have the Spring Band Concert at 6:30 PM in the MPR and on May 31st, we have our Celebration Dance Showcase at 6 PM in the MPR.

Week of May 13th
 

Advanced Placement testing continues this week.

There will be a School Site Council meeting Tuesday at 3:15 PM in the PCR.

May 18th is the last day of Saturday School.

Starting August 2019, Cleveland will have a new bell schedule to accommodate the relocation of classrooms during our construction.  Please check the school website for details.

Week of May 6th:

Advanced Placement exams begin this week. The schedule and room locations are posted on the school calendar. Good luck to all our test takers.

Have you heard about Measure EE on the June 4th ballot? Measure EE is a local school parcel tax funding measure, and you are encouraged to be well informed about it. Week of April 29th:

Seniors, auditions for Graduation Speakers and Singers is Wednesday at 3:30 PM in F-9.

On Thursday, we have our Affiliated Charter Oversight Visit. 

Cleveland families, you are invited to a community and parent meeting on Thursday at 6 PM in the MPR to receive updates on the ongoing Campus Modernization project.

College Signing Day is Friday.  We encourage everyone to wear their college gear and ask our seniors to join us on the Quad at Nutrition to participate in a variety of activities.

Prom Ticket Distribution is Friday at lunch on the Quad and Prom is Saturday evening.  More information is available on the school website under Senior Activities.

Week of April 22nd:
 

This is Senior Spirit Week.  Check the school website under Senior Activities for details.

This is an important testing week for juniors. All 11th grade students will be taking the SBAC state assessments.  On Tuesday, all juniors will be taking the math portion and on Thursday they will be taking the English-Language Arts section.  Good luck to all. Rest up, eat a healthy breakfast, do your best, and show your Cavalier pride.

There will be a PTSA meeting on Wednesday at 6 PM in the Parent Center.

The SAS Film Festival is Friday at 3:30 PM in the MPR.

Week of April 8th:

There is a blood drive on Tuesday all day in the MPR. We also have a drop/cover/hold drill on Tuesday during period 2 and a Cleveland Governance Council meeting at 3:15 PM in the PCR.

Student Body elections are Wednesday and Thursday. All 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students. Make your vote count.

On Thursday, all 11th grade students will be taking the California Science Test. Please plan accordingly.

Week of April 1st:

There is no school on Monday in observance of Cesar Chavez Day.

Wednesday is the last day to pick up a media release form for Friday’s lunchtime event on the Quad.

Friday we will be on an extended lunch schedule.  School will still begin at 7:57 AM and end at 3:04 PM.

Week of March 25th:

There will be a School Site Council meeting on Tuesday at 3:15 PM in the PCR.

On Wednesday, 11th grade students will be taking the SAT for free on campus.  All 9th, 10th, and 12th grade students will be attending their regular periods 1-6 classes.

We will be on a shortened day schedule on Thursday.  Join us that evening for our Open House Showcase from 6-7:30 PM.

Friday is a minimum day and school will let out at 12:34 PM.  We will have parent conferencing available from 1-3 PM. Please sign up with individual teachers.

Week of March 18th:

Tuesday is a professional development day. School lets out at 1:34 PM.  There will be no late buses.

If you missed the spring production of The Sound of Music, you can catch it this week on Thursday at 5 PM or Friday at 7 PM in the MPR.

Looking ahead: All 11th grade students will be taking the SAT on Wednesday, March 27.

Thursday, March 28 is a shortened day with a 1:59 PM dismissal. We also have Open House from 6-7:30 PM.

Friday, March 29 is a minimum day with a 12:34 PM dismissal. Parent conferencing is available that day from 1-3 PM.  Please sign up with individual teachers.

Week of March 11th:

On Tuesday, we will be conducting our monthly drop/cover/hold drill.

Tuesday is our Cleveland Governance Council meeting at 3:15 PM in the PCR.

Join us for our monthly Jazz Night at West Hills Pizza this Tuesday for an evening of great music and great food featuring our Jazz Ensemble. The music starts at 6:00 PM.

Wednesday we have our PTSA meeting at 3:15 PM in the Parent Center.

Drama presents The Sound of Music Friday and Saturday at 7 PM in the MPR. Tickets are $5 for students and $8 for adults.

And if you have not set your clocks forward one hour, please do so today as it is Daylight Saving Time.

 
Week of March 4th:

Tuesday is a professional development day. School lets out at 1:34 PM. There will be no late buses.

Seniors—Grad Nite tickets will be on sale Tuesday at lunch in H1. Tickets are limited. If tickets do not sell out on that day, PTSA will also be selling them on Wednesday.

This is National Foreign Language Week and our world languages department will be hosting a series of activities and events all week, including a Film Festival on Wednesday from 3:30-6 PM in D Hall.

Week of February 25th:
 
There will be a School Site Council meeting on Tuesday at 3:15 PM in the PCR. 

Seniors, don’t forget the California deadline to qualify for the initial financial aid award through the FAFSA or CA Dream Act Application is Saturday, March 2nd. If you need assistance, the College Office is hosting another workshop after school this Tuesday from 3:15-5:15 PM.

On Wednesday and Thursday, we have the District Validation Review for our Special Education program.

Saturday is the Senior Breakfast at the Odyssey.

Week of February 18th:

There is no school on Monday in observance of Presidents Day.

Tuesday is a staff development day. School will let out at 1:34 PM. There will be no late buses.

In Winter Athletic Playoffs, we have a double header as Boys and Girls Soccer will be playing in the semifinals: 3 PM for Boys and 4:30 PM for Girls. Both matches are at Granada.

If you would like to learn more about the California Dashboard State Accountability system and Cleveland’s status, please attend the meeting this Friday at 9:15 AM in the Parent Center.

Additionally, if you did not get a chance to walk through our Classroom of Compassion Parkland Tribute and would still like to visit the art installation, we will be housing it in the MPR for a couple of more days.

Week of February 11th:

Monday is College Night for 9th and 10th grade students at 6 PM in the MPR. 

Tuesday during period 2 we will conduct a lockdown drill.

Wednesday join us for the PTSA meeting at 3:15 PM in the Parent Center.

Winter Athletic Playoffs continue this week. Monday is Boys Soccer at 3 PM. Tuesday is Girls Soccer at 3 PM. Wednesday is Girls Basketball at 7 PM. All games are at The Land.

Looking ahead: There will be no school on Monday, February 18 in observance of Presidents’ Day.

 

Week of January 7th:

Monday is the first day of spring semester. Please make sure to get to your period 1 class by 7:57 AM. Tentative spring semester schedules are also available on the school website.

Students with lockers in C-Hall may request new locker assignments from the Student Store starting Monday.

Tuesday is a professional development day for staff. School will let out at 1:34 PM. There will be no late buses.

We will also have our monthly drop/cover/hold drill on Tuesday during period 2.

 
Week of December 10th:

The Sprint Initiative is offering Cleveland students who do not have wifi at home a Chromebook and a hotspot at no cost. Students are eligible to keep the devices until graduation. Please click on the link below to fill out the online form to sign up and stop by G4 to pick up an acknowledgment form from Ms. Amaya. The deadline to sign up is Friday, December 14th.

Spring semester class schedules will be distributed on Monday during period 2. If students have any issues with their schedules, counselors will be available in the MPR after school on Tuesday until 2 PM to fix programs.

Good luck to all our Cavaliers who will be taking finals this Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. School lets out at 12:36 PM during finals.

Because of the upcoming renovation of C Hall, students with C Hall lockers must clean out their lockers by 1 p.m. this Thursday, December 13. Students with C Hall lockers will receive new lockers  in the Interim Village, and they may request their new locker assignments from the Student Store on the first day of the Spring Semester. 

Friday is our Winter Wonderland Carnival at lunch. We will be on a shortened day schedule with a 1:59 PM dismissal.

School will be closed for Winter Break December 17-January 4.

 

Week of December 3rd:
 

There will be a drop/cover/hold drill period 2 on Tuesday. 

On Tuesday, join us for the GAIMS Film Festival at 4 PM in the MPR. 

Wednesday is the Instrumental Music Winter Concert at 6:30 PM in the MPR.

Week of November 5th:

Congratulations to our Girls Golf team for winning the City Championship two years in a row.

Parents of seniors - there is still time to have your child's senior portrait taken! Just contact White's Studios and schedule an appointment as soon as you can. Don't miss this special opportunity!

Tuesday is also Election Day. Don’t forget to vote.

Week of October 22nd:

Thursday is our annual College & Career Fair.

Don’t miss Drama’s production of The Man Who Came to Dinner. The last two performances are this Friday and Saturday at 7 PM in the MPR.

Week of October 15th:

This is Homecoming Spirit Week.  We encourage all Cavaliers to dress up for the Spirit Days and come out to the Quad all week long at lunch for games and activities.  Monday is Class Colors Day. Ninth grade students wear yellow; 10th graders wear red. Juniors wear green and seniors wear purple.

Tuesday is a professional development day. School lets out at 1:34 PM. There will be no late buses.

On Thursday during Period 4, we will be conducting the annual SHAKE Earthquake Evacuation and Search and Rescue Drill. All students and staff, and all visitors on campus at the time, must participate in the drill, and school offices will be closed. If, because of a genuine emergency, you must pick up your child from school during that time, you may do so from the Request Gate on Strathern St. 

Friday is the Homecoming Pep Rally, parade and game.  Details are available on the school website under the Student Activities section.

Saturday evening is the Homecoming Dance from 7-11 PM.  Tickets are limited so purchase them at the Student Store this week.

Week of October 8th: 

On Tuesday, there will be a Cleveland Governance Council meeting at 3:15 PM in the PCR.

Wednesday is the PSAT for grades 9-11.  Please check the school website for more information about our special schedule for this day.

Thursday is Coffee with the Administrators at 9:15 AM in the Parent Center.

If you have a Parent Portal account already, you should soon be receiving from the District a letter with a PIN.  You will need this PIN to continue using your account.  Any school office or counselor can also provide you with your child’s PIN.  If you have not signed up for an account, please do so through the school website under the Parents tab.  You will need your child’s District ID number and PIN to access the portal.

Week of October 1st:

Monday is the deadline for 9th and 11th grade students to register online for the PSAT.  This test is free but students must pre-register by October 1st.  Tenth grade students do not have to pre-register.

Tuesday is a professional development day for staff.  School will let out at 1:34 PM. There will be no late buses.

The PTSA meeting is Wednesday at 6:00 PM in the Parent Center.

On Thursday, we have College Night for Juniors and their parents at 6 PM in the MPR.

Week of September 24th:

This is Senior Spirit Week.  Join the Class of 2019 for activities and games on the Quad each day at lunch.

On Monday, Secretary of State Alex Padilla and State Senator Henry Stern will be on campus to discuss voter registration with students.  Please be advised that we may have media coverage for the event.

On Tuesday at 9:15 AM, we will host a parent meeting at 9:15 AM in the MPR to debrief the September 14 incident on campus.

On Tuesday at 3:15 PM, we have our School Site Council Meeting in the PCR.

On Wednesday, we will have period-by-period student assemblies in the MPR.

On Thursday, join us for Cocoa with the Counselors at 9:15 AM in the Parent Center.

And on Thursday evening, we have Financial Aid Night for Seniors at 6 PM in the MPR.

Week of September 17th:

This is a reminder that street parking on Vanalden Avenue will be limited this week due to campus construction activities. 

Monday and Tuesday we have 9th grade president and School Site Council elections at lunch near the Student Store.

Tuesday is a Professional Development Day for staff.  School lets out at 1:34 PM.  There will be no late buses. 

Join us on the Quad Tuesday for Constitution Day activities.

There will be no school Wednesday.

Yesterday, a phone message was sent home regarding school safety and an incident that school police is investigating.  As yet, we have not received any further updates from authorities. Again, as soon as we receive any updates, we will make them available. As mentioned, out of an abundance of caution, we will have additional patrols on campus this week. We urge you to speak to your child about the implications of joking or making false statements relating to campus safety. We also ask that you monitor your child’s social-media activity and behavior and communicate any concerns to school personnel. Finally, we encourage our school community to follow our District's message, if you see something, say something.

Looking ahead:  Next Monday, September 24, California Secretary of State Alex Padilla will be on campus to discuss voter registration with students. As there will be potential media coverage, please plan accordingly when dropping off students in the morning. 

 
Week of September 10th:

There will be no school this Monday.

We are looking for a few parents and community members to serve on the Cleveland Governance Council.  Self-nomination forms are available on the school website.

Parents of English Learners—our ELAC orientation and election will be Wednesday at 9 AM in the Parent Center.

Join us for our first Coffee with the Administrators on Thursday at 9:15 AM in the Parent Center.

Thursday is also College Night for Seniors.  This event is for class of 2019 students and their parents or guardians.

 
Week of September 3rd:

There will be no school on Monday in observance of Labor Day. 

Tuesday is a staff development day. School will let out at 1:34 PM. There will be no late buses.

This week seniors who would like to purchase an optional Senior Package may do so Tuesday-Friday during lunch at the Senior Kiosk.

We have ID Picture Makeup on Wednesday for those who do not have an ID card. All students must have one on campus at all times.

Cleveland will be offering before school, after school, and Saturday credit recovery classes. The deadline to sign up with your counselor is September 5th.

Ninth, 10th, and 11th grade students can take the PSAT for free on October 10th at the Land. All 9th and 11th grade students, however, must pre-register. The sign up link is available on the school website.

If you have not done so, please make sure to submit your meal application.  Every application counts.

Please make sure to sign up for an LAUSD Parent Portal to access student grades, attendance information, and more.

Week of August 20th:

Monday and Tuesday we have ID pictures all day in the MPR. 

Tuesday is a staff development day.  School will let out at 1:34 PM.

The last day to request a student schedule change is August 30th.

Don’t forget to submit your meal application.  Our goal is to have every student complete one.  We also encourage all families to sign up for the LAUSD Parent Portal which allows you access to student grades and other important information. 

Looking ahead: Join us for Back-to-School Night on Wednesday, August 29.  We will also offer parent conferencing on Thursday, August 30 from 1-3 PM.  You may sign up by sending a note to the individual teachers.

Week of August 13th:

Welcome back to school, Cavaliers!  We are excited to see you on Tuesday, August 14 by 7:57 AM for the first day of the fall semester. On this first day of school, students will report to their period 2 homeroom classes to get a copy of their course schedule.  Information is posted on our school website and lists will be available in front of the school. Those with a zero period class—please note that 0 period classes will begin Wednesday. 

As a reminder, it is District policy that students who do not show up on the first day of school will be checked out and dropped from all classes. Should this occur, students must report to the Attendance Office with a parent or legal guardian to re-enroll in the school.

If you have not already done so, please complete your meal application and sign up for the LAUSD Passport Parent Portal to access student grades and other pertinent items.  Information is available on the website.
