The 1950's was an era in which America was going into political and cultural changes. During this decade, communism was a big threat in the U.S. and started the Korean War. This also created Anti-communists movements and fear of one another. When China fell to communism in 1949, America was afraid that it might spread allover the world. This caused tensions in each country. Harry S. Truman decided to help becausehe didn't want communism to spread to the south of Korea. But the U.S. entered the war duringthe winter and many soldiers got frostbite or sick. One of the U.S. generals Douglas Mac Arthur sent American troops to North Korea not knowing that they had no weapons or clothing towithstand the harsh weather conditions. Also North Korea was better armed, trained, and newThey're way through the land. After the death of president Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman became president.During his term, Truman ordered that the atomic bomb be drooped on Japan and the cold warbegan. He also signed the National Security Act , which created the Central Intelligence Agency(CIA). Although he was a president with power he was a humble man with no personal fortune.He never went to college and his family was very decent. Truman was known to be an honest, hewould say ' Three things ruin a man, power, money, and women ,' he said ' I never wanted power,never had any money, and the only woman in my life is my wife '. The most controversial movement in the 1950's was the Anti-communist party. This isthe time in which the McCarthy era was rising. Which caused "witch hunts'' and the FBI questioning suspects. Joe McCarthy's famous speech, made the U.S. feel uneasy. A lot of witchhunts were involved with in the government. Some questioning innocent people and sendingthem to jail. No one knows for sure if McCarthy's list was real or not. Some say that he justwanted attention, but he accused many innocent people in the government. In conclusion the 1950's was a time were there was a lot of conflicts and confusion. Atime that many people feared communism and America started to change. Many people started tolive in the suburbs instead of big cities. They were able to do more family things, watch the firsttelevision and go on vacations. When young people were turning rebellious, Rock 'n' Roll wasborn and better education. |
