The 50's were a time of inventions. Discovering new ideas and making them work. The things that were invented in this era were the Hydrogen bombs, the first diet soda, the first Barbie doll, transistors for TV tubes, spray cans for paint, and fiberglass.

Hydrogen bombs were a big issue in the 1950s. Many people had bomb shelters and even bomb drills in schools. The Bombs were tested in desert areas that were not populated cities. But there would some test accidents that would happen around these areas.

Other inventions that were very popular were the toys. Like the first potato head, the Barbie doll, the hula-hoop along with other toys. The Barbie was invented by a woman called Ruth Handler (co-founder of Mattel). She named the toy after her daughter Barbara and ken doll after her son too. She introduced the doll at the New York City American toy fair. George lerner sold the first Mr. potato head in 1952. It was based on an earlier toy called "make a face" using a real potato. But the he sold his invention to Hasbro inc.
