jkLittle women

Little women is a book written in 1869 right after the civil war ended. The title "Little Women" comes from the story itself, the father of the four girls called them little women in a letter he sent them from the war. This story is about four sisters , Meg the oldest, then Jo, then Beth, and then Amy the youngest of the four.

Meg is the oldest sister of the four. She is very smart and loves to dress up and act out plays with her sisters. Jo is the tall one she is a tom boy. Since their father is fighting in the Civil War she claimed herself as the man of the house while he was gone. She wishes she was born a boy so that she could do whatever boys do, and go into battle with her father at least as a nurse or a drummer boy. Jo also used slang instead of proper English. Beth is the quiet one of the bunch. Her dad even gave her a little nickname "little miss tranquility" which was just right for her because of how calm and quiet she always is all the time. Amy is the youngest of the four. She is the girl that thinks the whole world revolves around her , and in her mind she is the most important of the sisters. The four girls were very generous for example on Christmas they each brought something for their mother instead of getting something for themselves. Each sister realized that they had each other and didn't need anything else and her mother needed new slippers because the ones she had were old and starting to fall apart so they bought her mom new slippers, perfume, and other little stuff. Mrs. March their mother is also a very generous person and nice. She supports her daughters through everything and they help her in return. Mrs. March got her daughters a book for Christmas it wasn't much since they didn't have that much money but the girls appreciated the gift and promised to read a little bit everyday.

Louisa May Alcott's style is a very unique within the character's words. She uses unique word choice that is hard to find now a days, tone, and figurative language. An example of her word choice would be when the girls are reciting a play on Christmas " Hither, Hither, from thy home, Airy sprite, I bid thee come." These word choices like hither, thy, thee, and airy are interesting because no one really writes in that manner any more and is an important part of her style. She has a very informative tone for example with the characters she mentions from skin tone to height, "A regular snow maiden, with blue eyes, and a yellow hair curling on her shoulders, pale and slender, and always carrying herself like a young lady mindful of manners." Here she describes Amy with a lot of details and is very informative. She also uses a bit of figurative language in her writing for example "Your hands are as nig as an elephants foot, and you'll stretch my glove dreadfully."

The theme of this story book is even though rough times come on must be strong and help others in need and support the ones we love. An example of this would be on Christmas morning they were about to eat when Ms. March told them about a poor woman with a new born baby and six other children and they were starving and had no fire so they were freezing. So the four girls decided to give them their breakfast and start a fire for them, "May I go and help carry the things to the poor little children asked Beth eagerly.... I thought you would do it, said Mrs. March, smiling as if satisfied.

This book was written in the time of war; Americas bloodiest war ever. And in this time there was a lot of families were fathers, husbands, brothers and sons went to war and left a family at home and this book tells a story of a young family that had to go through that. During the civil war while the men are at war the women have to maintain the house, children, and money, this gives u an Idea of how some families had to struggle and live. I think it also shows how even at a time of war and hard times that people should be strong and kind with one another instead of making things worse that is the message I got from the book.
This book was an iconic work from the decade of 1860 because even today they are selling this book and as a very good selling book. It is a book that can get touching and is what a lot of people love to read.
