1860's art

The 1860's was a decade of beautiful realistic art. Two of these great 1860's artists are James Whistler and Thomas Eakins. The main art style they concentrated and was really famous at that time was realism. Both artist were amazing at making realistic paintings and made them seem as if they were photographs.

James Whistler was a famous artist around the 1860's and has made paintings that are amusing. He was born in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1834. One of his paintings I like is symphony in white no. 1: The White Girl . This painting has an eerie element to it the woman looks to be in a sad mood, she is standing on what looks like a wolf and fur, and the background it looks like trees or a curtain. The other symphonies in white are very different from the first one. Whistler went to South America where he painted seascapes. One of his seascapes is symphony in grey and green it is a very smooth painting on the water but when it gets to the sky it looks very rough. He uses a lot of green and blue for the ocean and he uses a lot of grey for the sky.

Thomas Eakins is another great artist around the 1860's. He was born in Philadelphia on July 25, 1844. He was a painter, photographer, and a sculptor. One of his famous paintings was The Gross Clinic. In this painting u can see a lot of people and the main people in the front looks like they are signing a petition of some sort or cutting someone up. This painting has a lot of rough edges and has a dark color choice like black, grey, and dark brown. An example of Eakins' photography is Study in Human Motion . In this photograph it shows a naked man jumping and it shows the movement of the human body as it leaps. It Is a black and white photograph which makes it easier to see the body in every movement.

This decade was about war but within it there was art that still is greatly appreciated today. I think that actually game artist something to concentrate on and gave them a subject to work on or even make art of what they think the outcome would be.
