SAS Application Guide

*Both sides of the application must be filled out completely. Incomplete applications or those missing the required signatures from either the student’s current middle or high school administrator or teacher under the “Verification” section will not be reviewed.

When is the SAS application due and where do I turn it in?

  • SAS applications must be dropped off or mailed in to the Counseling Office between May 3-31, 2010. The address is 8140 Vanalden Ave., Reseda, CA 91335.

Who is eligible for the SAS program and how are admissions decisions made?

  • Students identified as gifted who live in Cleveland’s home school area do not complete an SAS application. These students have received an eligibility letter to be returned to the Counseling Office.

  • Students not identified as gifted and/or who do not live in Cleveland’s home school area must submit an SAS application to be considered for the program. Alternative eligibility criteria is listed on the back page (or page 2 if printed from the website) of the application.

  • On June 1, the SAS application review committee will begin reviewing all SAS applications. We do not have a lottery for admitting students at this point in time.

How and when will I be notified of my acceptance to the SAS program?

  • Letters will be mailed home to all applicants between June 1-8, 2010. The letter will indicate whether or not the applicant was admitted to the program and will include class programming information and orientation dates for admitted students.

What supporting documents are required for my application?

  • An ID20 must be included with the application. This document is only available at the student’s current middle or high school. Please ask for an ID20 in their Counseling Office.

  • If your child attends private school, please attach final grades from the seventh grade and fall semester of the eighth grade, as well as standardized test scores in English Language Arts and Math from grades six through eight. Standardized tests can be ERB, Stanford, Iowa tests, or similar.

  • Letters of recommendation and samples of the student’s work may be included, but are not required.

If you have additional questions regarding the SAS program and/or the SAS application, please contact your child’s current middle school counselor. A list of applications received will be available on May 26 in the Counseling Office. To ensure your name is on this list, you must call the Counseling Office at 818-885-2300.

What is the difference between SAS and Magnet?

- SAS is a program for gifted students.

- Ninth and tenth grade English and Biology for SAS students are “high” honors classes. In these classes, teachers present a differentiated curriculum to meet the needs of their gifted students.

- SAS students are required to take their first advanced placement class in the tenth grade.

- While many Magnet students have the gifted designation, Magnet is not a gifted program.

- Magnet students take several cored subjects. SAS classes are stand-alone classes, mainly because SAS students take advanced placement classes beginning in the tenth grade.

- Buses are not provided to SAS students who live out of Cleveland’s residential area.
